Types of Sedation Dentistry

Posted .

Do you feel anxious when you go to the dentist? This is common, but that doesn’t mean it’s enjoyable. Fortunately, there are several types of sedatives that ease any stress you may be feeling, including the following:

Nitrous Oxide: This gas mixture consists of oxygen and nitrogen, better known as laughing gas, which is inhaled through the lungs. We use this in many dental procedures and to help patients with dental anxiety to relax.

Oral Sedation: Oral sedation is accomplished by means of a swallowed pill. This type of sedation is easily personalized based on dosage and desired effect, but it takes time for the sedative to take effect, often up to as much as an hour. This is why dentist often prescribe this to be taken before your appointment so that when you arrive you are relaxed and ready.

Intravenous Sedation: Intravenous sedation means the sedative is inserted directly into the bloodstream. This is powerful and fast-acting. It can also be controlled very easily, inducing sleep if needed.

Anesthetic Sedation: General anesthesia is often considered the strongest form of sedative, as it places patients in a deep sleep.
